Dickens takes a boat trip critical analysis:-

Dickens takes a boat trip critical analysis ;For every gallant ship was riding slowly up and down, and every little boat was splashing noisily in the water; and knots of people stood upon the wharf, gazing with a kind of ‘dread delight’ on the far-famed fast American steamer; and one party of men were ‘taking in the milk,’ or, in other words, getting the cow on board; and another were filling the icehouses to the very throat with fresh provisions; with butchers’-meat and garden-stuff, pale sucking-pigs, calves’ heads in scores, beef, veal, and pork, and poultry out of all proportion; and others were coiling ropes and busy with oakum yarns; and others were lowering heavy packages into the hold; and the purser’s head was barely visible as it loomed in a state, of exquisite perplexity1 from the midst of a vast pile of passengers’ luggage; and there seemed to be nothing going on anywhere, or uppermost in the mind of anybody, but preparations for this mighty voyage.1 – hard to understand1. Dickens takes a boat trip paragraph critical analysis:-

In this above paragraph language is simple, colloquial and even though a common man can understand very easily and quickly. There is no use of bombastic words rather they are simple and lucid. There is no more Shakespeare or Milton’s style in using language. Only day to day life words have been used in this paragraph. For instance very first lines inform us there is a voyage is going on “For every gallant ship was riding”.

As far as language is concerned of this paragraph is interwoven in very logical manners , coherence is exist, no loose structure is used here, every sentence is moving on, in logical way and has sequence in itself , it seems that here a story is being discussed. The sentence structure as well as paragraph is not complex rather it is so easy and smooth by first time a layman or common reader understands its whole meanings. So, far as, the writer uses language to convey meanings and to creates effect in the paragraph.

Once again in above lines the use of ‘dread delight’ and far-famed fast are Alliteration. ‘Dread delight’ on the far-famed fast American steamer, there seemed to be nothing going on anywhere, or uppermost in the mind of anybody, are exquisite perplexity in mind , exquisite means making confusion but after some it may clear up.

The writer uses language to convey meanings and to creates effect in the paragraph in this sense a reader finds out natural as well as visual effects in this paragraph ‘taking in the milk’, cow, icehouses, pig, buthers, poultry all of them create natural as well as visual effects on the mind of the readers. If a man closes his eyes and then he imagines about that things he can visualize these things. And one more thing it seems that the writer has been taken all of these things from the copy of nature. A  writer conveys his meaning the voyage preparations are doing.

Use of Imagery:-

The hall mark of imagery can be seen in this paragraph as well. Concrete imagery and abstract imagery are used by the author in this paragraph like that  men, milk, boat, ship, cow, icehouses, pigs, buthers, poultry, beef,  passangers,  have used as tool of concrete imagery while on the other hand, splashing noisily, ‘dread delight’ are abstracts imagery .

Conclusion:-

In short, at last but least, we can say that in this extract  the language is simple if he does not do so then a reader may not understand his meaning, his real massage , the use of imagery, and effects the mind of readers. A  writer conveys his meaning the voyage preparations are doing.
