Santiago faces exceptional sufferings because of his flaw. Santiago’s struggle with the marlin has tragic qualities because of the suffering and endurance of the fish and the old man. Our feelings of admiration and pity are aroused for both of them.

He fails to catch fish for 84 days. The people consider him unlucky. He puts great resistance against the hardships of life. At last he succeeds in catching a big marlin. He has to fight against the marlin for three days. He does not rest for a single minute. When he catches the marlin he is satisfied at the reward of his struggle but his happiness does not last long. He faces another great problem in the form of sharks. There is no doubt that he loses the battle against the sharks but he wins the moral victory. He looks quite tragic and pitiable. He is like Christ crucified. This is indeed very tragic. However he says;

                                      “I will fight them until I die”

He is still undefeated because in spite of his tragic end, he is not disappointed and defeated.
