Tess was a pure woman
There is controversy about the purity of the Tess. We can’t call him impure at all. She resisted when Alice tries to kiss her in the start of the novel. But she has lost her chastity with her own consent. She could have resisted on her seduction but she did not do this task. This thing makes her improper at the situation. She was a Victorian woman and we can see that she has lost her virginity and chastity. So according to the standards of the Victorian society, she would be regarded as an impure woman because she has been attacked on her virginity by someone. Hardy tries to cover the subject by elaborating the two types of the chastity. One of them is the chastity of the mind of the man and the other is of the body of the man. So he says that the person may be called bodily unchaste but still he may assert his chastity by his soul and mind. He proves with his arguments that Tess was a pure woman because she lost her chastity of body but she remained chaste by the core of her soul and the mind.
