Historical linguistics deals with the study and analysis of changes made by linguists in different languages. Linguist also studies how and when these changes have been executed to bring revolution about different languages. Historical linguistics aims at the development and production of different languages over a brief period of history. It studies the ways in which languages change and get a modification.
Historical linguistics as the comparative method
Historical linguistics and comparative method aims to depict the relationship between different languages over a brief period of history. Sometimes it is titled comparative historical linguistics because it is responsible for identifying the ways in which languages are compared to each other. It is worthwhile to compare languages in order to get maximum knowledge about that languages. It is necessary to take a look at different factors that are responsible for this comparison and change within a language. It cannot be understood without the properly contextualized meanings and sources about the changes in a language. It aims at the fundamental resources that are accountable for these changes in a particular language.
Why languages change and to what extent?
There is always discussion about the changes in society and its aspects. Linguist tries to identify the causes that bring change in a particular language with the passage of time. They have observed a great change in different languages. The linguist ponders over the idea and tries to identify the concerned factors. It is because of great changes made by humans and in their lifestyle. They have adopted different new ideas and thoughts with the passage of time. As all, us know that language is a common source of human communication. Communication is the major pillar of society. They come to know about the needs and realities of other human beings by communicating with them. As society progresses towards a great change, human nature is also changed under the influence of this change. Human nature is always capable of great changes and modifications. So the languages associated with human nature also change with them respectively. A morphological change involves the process of assimilation and the analogy of different sounds. We know that different sounds are produced from the vocal folds and the human pitch of voices is also variable from humans to humans. Different sounds are produced by different human beings at the same time and thus correspond to the change in different languages. When a native speaker interacts with the other person the language of that area is also modified. They introduce different words and dialects to the concerned languages in order to bring a change to a particular language of that area. If one factor is a component of a language is changed it will affect the whole system the whole pattern of grammar from phonology to phonetics is modified on the basis of this resulting change.
Language change is systematic
The change in a given language affects the whole lexicon. The whole system of languages gets modified by the addition of a single dialect or word into the system. The other languages welcome this change in a systematic order to bring revolution in the history of linguistics. This change may be regarding the pronunciation of the word or the morphological structure of that language. In response to a systematic system of change in language is responsible for the change in the system or sub-system of a given particular language. The whole system is modified as a result of this change. Some changes in a language or based on the context of a given language.
The wave model of a language change
Geographical changes also bring changes to a language. A significant change is made within a language in a specific county and it influences all other counties also when it spreads to that area. The pattern of influencing different languages works in a systematic order. Many languages get modified by the system in a given time. This working of changing languages is titled as wave model of a language change.
An anthropological perspective on language change
The linguist also ponders over the idea that on which rate language changes and gets modification. Some people are rigid in their principles and traditions. They kept on following the same trends or ideas with rigorous force. There the process of language changes occurs at a very slow rate. These people are blindly connected to their existing dialects. But some people are fond of getting novelty in every aspect of society. They favor changes in a given language. The rate of change in this speech community will be more rapid and quick as compared to the community where people are fond of stability and do not favor a change in language and dialect. When a favorable change occurs in a given language people will try to imitate it and change will spread rapidly. The change depends on the usage of that language. This will be kept on increasing with the increase in the usage of that particular language.
The language is composed of different dialects. These dialects are the fundamental pillars of a language. People speak in different dialects while having a common and general language. The historical study of dialects o different languages comes under the title of dialectology. Dialectal changes are directly influenced by the change in the pronunciation of a word in a given language. It may also change due to the influence of grammatical changes in that language.
Comparative philology
Cross-linguistic features and the relationship between different languages are introduced to us through comparative philology. Sometimes the words and sounds in a given language correlate and the study of this feature is done with the help of comparison between two languages.
Different words are introduced to a particular language in order to e novelty in that language. The study of word formation in history and origination of these is called etymology. It answers the question about the origination and formation of those particular words.
