Iago character in Othello

Iago character in Othello:-

A  name comes on the tongues which surprises us , that has not been in any one except Shakespearea’s character in Othello and he is Iago. His office is evil and his job spread anrachy, his upmost duty is to  break the peace in domestic life. I suggest that he is confirmed accepted pray of Satan,  Satan mighty be prayed to God “Bestowed me with little child who follow me” and he is created in this universe. Iago is the most notorious character in entire literature. Iago’s character is a villain, but he has achieved so much fame that he has acquired more importance than hero in this play Othello, but since this character has been created, a lot of questions have arisen about him. Within this drama, he is still not clear and cannot be done. What is the purpose of this character in drama, what was the goal, it has not been done yet, but it can be told that he had no mosquito but he kept a relation from the party of Satan, he had a devil and even, when it happens, Othello starts to kill and comes in the top of the stalls, then he tells him that “I will not kill you, in you see me as a devil”. We can say that he is a companion of the devil. He is the one who destroys domestic peace. He is the one who always likes evil and hates good because he says that he is who I am, that I am not. The interesting thing is that nobody knows his surface in this drama apart from all the people of Roderigo considers him very nice guys but in reality he is a villain. His greatest quality is that apart from her wife nobody understands him.

As far as Iago’s  characher is concerned , he is fond of adventure ,he always wants to try something different , in this play we find him, he does adventure ,

According to  Coleridge, he is the motive without enmity?  A.C Bradley do not agree on the matter and says Shakespeare achieves uncountable motives through Spector . Ayya’s eye motives sometimes come and sometimes they see everything inside the drama.

Iago’s Tasks:-

It  seems  that he has no real motives in his mind ; his motives come and go out at different level of play ,his anger appears very first of the play about  Cassio’s  appointment, he discusses it with Roderigo and after it , he never speaks up a single word about it till the end of the play. It is not surprising element for readers that he has  feelings of  hatred about Othello because Othello appoints to Cassio as a duke rather   Iago’s  claim is that he is senior than Roderigo ,that is narrated by Othello in first act and in first soliloquy.

“One Michael Cassio, a Florentine,
A fellow almost damned in a fair wife,
That never set a squadron in the field,
Nor the division of a battle knows
More than a spinster—unless the bookish theoric,
Wherein the togèd consuls can propose
As masterly as he: mere prattle, without practice
Is all his soldiership. But he, sir, had the election;
And I, of whom his eyes had seen the proof
At Rhodes, at Cyprus and on other grounds
Christian and heathen, must be beleed and
By debitor and creditor. This counter-caster,
He, in good time, must his lieutenant be “(1.1.21-34)

Character of Iago is delineated with element of  suspicion, he is suspicious about  Cassio and  Othello have affair  with his wife Emilia not only that idea comes in first soliloquy but also in second soliloquy and after that ,this ideas is disappeared forever.

After some time, to abuse Othello’s ear
That he is too familiar with his wife.
He hath a person and a smooth dispose
To be suspected, framed to make women false.
The Moor is of a free and open nature,
That thinks men honest that but seem to be so,
And will as tenderly be led by th’ nose
As asses are.
I have ‘t. It is engendered. Hell and night
Must bring this monstrous birth to the world’s light.”

Above lines show that Othello has slept with his wife Emilia and he will not plant the seeds of jealousy and doubts .But he is not clear here either he slept or not. These all things reveal that Iago is suspious character in Othello play.

“I hate the Moor,
And it is thought abroad, that ‘twixt my sheets
‘Has done my office. I know not if ‘t be true,
But I, for mere suspicion in that kind,
Will do as if for surety. ‘

Above lines reveals his hatred about Othello because Othello passes over to Cassio him. Othello has slept with his wife Emilia and he will not plant the seeds of jealousy and doubts .But he is not clear here either he slept or not.

“The Moor already changes with my poison;
Dangerous conceits are in their natures poisons,
Which at the first are scarce found to distaste,
But with a little act upon the blood
Burn like the mines of Sulphur.Look, where he comes. Not poppy, nor mandragora

Nor all the drowsy syrups of the world

Shall ever medicine thee to that sweet sleep

Which thou owedst yesterday. “

Here , Iago is satisfied he has poisoned and in this world no medicine which can cure it , he can not even sleep at night. Iago’s character in Othello play is very much strange, he makes plan with full honestly, it seems that he is very much sincere his job which is cunningness and destroy to others. He takes advantage himself from the adventure, he does all the things for his adventure as well as his sport. Above statement reveals that he has poisoned the mind of Othello that was impossible for a common man because Othello loves his wife very much and he and the reader can not think Othello can not kill his wife with his own. Here, we should appreciate him for this how does he do all of them either it is good or bad.

“O, beware, my lord, of jealousy!
It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on;”

Here, Iago ironically reveals that we should beware by jealousy, it can destroy the humanity. As we have discussed that Iago is a man who is great planner and he makes his plan with his own mind , he never ever adds any one in his plan but he uses the men for his plan it is trait of “Renaissance” age”.

Iago’s character in “OTHELLO” play is delineated in the respect of “Renaissance” sense, he is adventurist by his mind, and he does so in this play. He is a man who loves liberty either he has to pay for it , he can not live in any shackle of life. As we know that the spirit of “Renaissance” is lust for power, he wants to power in this play that is why he makes a fatal plan. Now we can say that he is product of “Renaissance” age.

“Trifles light as air
Are to the jealous confirmations strong
As proofs of holy writ. This may do something.”

Here his gesture towards Desdemona’s Chasity and at the end he makes the cause of death Desdemona. Iago’s character craftsman ship can be seen in this sense he destroys Othello, Desdemona, Cassio with one bullet. When we analyse he kills to Desdemona with his own husband and the basis of her virtue. Her strong area proves to be weak one before Iago plan .To Desdemona her love, her faithfulness , her sincerity , her Chasity are the main weapon but these weapon go to her against her , her Chasity is proved to be false by Iago’s character in play Othello.

“So will I turn her virtue into pitch
And out of her own goodness make the net
That shall enmesh them all.”

At least but not last we can say tat Iago is a character who influence whole the the play Othello , he has very much importance than Othello, it seems that the author has fixed his camera on him .

Thus do I ever make my fool my purse,
For I mine own gained knowledge should profane
If I would time expend with such a snipe
But for my sport and profit. (I.iii.)
