Jane Austen Limited Range

Jane Austen Limited Range:-

As far as Jane Austen Limited range  is concerned it is all the time on the target in the hand of critics those belief that her themes,  her characters,  her plots of construction, her characterization are limited. She always deals with small materials, she has lake of emotions lake of imagination or imaginative approach in her novels  that are  soul of any  literature. “Two inches of ivory. Three or four families in a country village is the very thing to work on.” Jane Austen these herself admits that these words. But the question is that why does she employ this approach and  adopts that way, the answer is that Jane Austen was live in that era where there was no freedom for women, they had to live in their household, they had no basic rights, even though in Legacy of parental, there was no right  to get property from them. “First and foremost, let Jane Austen be named, the greatest artist that has ever written… Her circle may be restricted, but it is complete. Her world is a perfect orb, and vital sphere.” G.H Lewes remarks here. It is clear cut  in the case of Collins and Elizabeth she was forced by her mother that  she should have got marry with Mr. Collins  so that the property of family might be safe.

An other  reason is that she she lived in a small part of the country side that was kept same unaffected and there was no change in her area and she was remain unaware about political affairs that is why, it is made a charge against  her novels are often absence of political affairs. She  sometime  forgets to deal natural aspects of world she does not go to outside of the household, she is always connected with domestic issues. “That young lady has a talent for describing the involvement of feelings and characters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I have ever met with.” Sir Walter Scott .She hardly talks about kings queens,  if she  inserts upper classes in her novels  so that she wants to expose their follies, their vanities , their hollowness etc. She usually represents  middle classes and lower classes  those represent in her novels so that she may tell us about their problems .

“There are four families in a country village is the very thing to work on.” Jane Austen herself that she has no need to very much characters for her novels, three or four families are enough for her novels. It is all shows that she herself takes little materials for her novels. Her nephew James Austen Leigh narrates that in tis manners ;- “She was always careful not to meddle with matters with which she did not thoroughly understand”.

There is an other charge against of Jane Austen  is that she lacks of  emotions and  her characters are devoid of emotions that is why “Her business is not half so much with the human heart as with the human eye, mouth, hands and feet.” Charlotte Bronte. It is said that her characters are lack of emotions, they look like computerize figure that are vacant by emotions and feelings .As Charlotte Bronte rightly said “The passions art completely unknown to her.” When we read the whole novel Pride And Prejudice we find out that there are so many characters that are dealt with emotionally as well as passionately. They are emotional as well as they are passionate in this sense they fight , they hate one another , they annoyed, the love etc. [

Vagina Wolf rightly says that as under below :-

“Jane Austen is the mistress of a much deeper emotion than appears on the surface.” Vagina Wolf rightly says that

In her novels, her themes, her plots, her characters, her style are limited which labels her limited range. Her materials come to see in repetition, there is no new plot, no new theme, no new issues . That shows “Jane Austen Limited Range”. As H.W Garrod suggests that in this manners:-

She invents no new plots, she repeats her characters, she employs again and again the same setting ….drab scenery, the worse for use, a thin plot unfashionably cut and by turning , relining and trimming made todo for or six novels, a dozen or so stock characters ….these are Miss Austen’s materials.

It is usually said that Jane never ever much more knows about human psychic that is very limited, mostly about males ,therefore, she writes about primarily women having been a woman she considers mostly women’s emotions. “yet they are all as perfectly discriminated from each other as if they were the most eccentric of human beings. ”Macaulay suggests here. And Wordsworth’s point of view “Her novels are an admirable copy of life.”

Her novels devoid of any spiritual elements and there is no religion, no political issue, metaphysical elements in her novels rather there is album of day to day life and that is related with only four walls life.

Jane Austen’s novels are repeleted with only day to day life , her six novels are clear cut prove of it, in these novels the young girl’s main task is hunting the young boys for their suitable couple. Jane Austen never ever speaks about political issues or revolutionary ideas even though, she lived in this era when French revolution was in its peak. She still remained to detach from this events. It seems that her main task is, delineating the picture of four walls .In her novels we can see that the ladies have desires for marry. “She never goes out of the Parlour.”Edward Fitzgerald says

Jane Austen’s novels or limited range can be checked out , when we see that women are her main protagonist, however, her novels run with the theme of women and her lives. We hardly find out any male protagonist in her novel, if we find out them, and they are found out in the company of women. The women’s main problems, her views , her legacy problems, male dominants society, women’s four walls problems are mostly her themes in her novels that shows up her limited range. In ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ we can see Jane Austen limited range that easily, it seems that her novels are based on women’s life, Male are secondary. The reader has to fix his eyes on female character, it common happens in Pride and Prejudice, we look all the episode with help of Elizabeth Bennet, real Darcy has been lost in hands of Elizabeth’s prejudice . And her novels themes are mostly linked with marriage and money , it seems that marriage and money her real motives in her novel as we can see by this statement:- “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”

Above statement which is spoken out herself by Jane Austen informs us that she is not in mood of writing a romantic novel, here she describes that she can not write about romance even though only on gun point, it means she can to be forced to write about romance

“I could no more write a romance than an epic poem. I could not sit down seriously to write a serious romance under any other motive than to save my life.”

As far as Jane Austen’s novels as well as ” Limited Range” are concerned, they are not like Hardy’s novel that all the time end up on tragic ending way rather they end up on happy ending. We take morality by her novels but her morality implicit in her novels that is true under below :-

“She ruffles her reader by nothing vehement, disturbs him by nothing profound. The passions are perfectly unknown to her : she rejects even a speaking acquaintance with that stormy sisterhood. “Charlotte Bronte remarks here

“within the range of her imaginative inspiration.”Lord David Cecil

In short, Jane Austen herself imposed limited range in her works because it suits her, she does not try to expand her works that is why she herself claims that .”There are four families in a country village is the very thing to work on.” “Two inches of ivory. Three or four families in a country village is the very thing to work on.”
