He starts his essay with this lines;-
“He hath wife and children hath given hostages to fortune ; for they are impediments to great enterprises, either of virtue or mischief.”
Critical Analysis :-
Above lines state that a man who has wife and children , he is nothing but a prisoner in jail of happy marriage life , he cannot do so anything which is fillful with risks and loses, he has to follow the rule of married life . As we know that in a single life man usually becomes free from responsibilities and he can do anything which he likes , here, we remind the poem” All the World a Stage” written by “ Shakspears in this poem the forth stage describes like that feeling , in this stage he becomes a solider and for bubble fame he puts his life in the hand of death just for the sake of fame but in marriage life this scenario would be changed .On other hand a married man will not admit any enterprise in which he may suffer loss .That is meaning he can not take any risks .
For they are impediments to great enterprises, either of virtue or mischief.”
A family man cannot take part any activity either publically or privately, he has to take precautions in this way .Even though he hesitates to take part in any activities either nobles or mischief. Here means that a man cannot take part in political field in Bacon’s time political field was considered a very high place in society .As we know that in political field a man creates conspiracy against his opponent, a married person focus primarily on his family.
“Certainly the best works, and of greatest merit for the public , have proceeded from the unmarried or children or childless men both in affection and means , have married and endowed the public.”
In critical sense , a man who has no children and wife , he is the best friend of society because his child is society , his wife is society , he works for society , these qualities are deprived from married person
‘Yet it were great reason that those that have children should have greatest care of future times; unto which they know they must transmit their dearest pledges.’
because he always thinks over his family first , his topmost priority mostly refers for his family , he all the time is bother for future rather than present because in future his children will live. It is not so suspiring that a married person takes bribe because he has a large family that has been depended on him .On the contrary of it a single man does not any more ambitious , he lives for other ,therefore, he has no dependants in his life.
“Nay, there are some other that account wife and children but as bills of charges. Nay more, there are some foolish rich covetous men, that take a pride in having no children, because they may be thought so much the richer.”
