Symbols Waiting for Godot

Symbol significance in waiting for Godot:-

“Waiting for Godot”play has several symbols elements in itself. As per these are tree, rope, country road,Godot himself and characters of  waiting for Godot symbols in this play. Waiting for Godot does not give us very many elaborately sketch characters. Nor do the characters  attract us on account of their  eccentricity,  though ,eccentricity  they do exhibit. Estragon and  Vladimir do not grip our attention as individual. Beckett’s  technique is to give his characters wider identity .Estragon, Vladimir , Pozzo and Lucky are not  delineated in such a way as would make their individual identity look at stake. They are instance of rather representative of mankind and of his responses. Thus for example, we observe particular the names of the characters. And differentiable Estragon is French, Vladimir is Russian , Pozzo  is Italian and Lucky is English.

So the characters represent the human race as well as symbols for us ‘Waiting for Godot’. Keeping this fact in mind will make it easy for us to grasp the theme too. The characters not only represent mankind or symbols of mankind,’Waiting for Godot ‘in addition they might also be said to represent typical responses of the human race. Estragon is the sensualist, the common unthinking materialist .He is happy while his ordinary needs are satisfied .His needs really are ordinary .Where it not for his bad dreams, he might be reasonably happy with comfortable boots for his feet and food for his stomach. Vladimir on the other hand has more rational, more intellectual concerns. He introduced the religious conversation in the play with his talk of thieves on the cross. It is he who expresses awareness of their impoverished  circumstances ,looking back at the days when they were respectable .Further it is Vladimir who sees a deeper significance in the plight of  Pozzo and Lucky when they are groveling on the ground. Calling for help” it is not everyday that we are needed” , he comments .He might be said to be the embodiment of the rational man who seeks by his intellectual  to make sense of his environment .However his reason is no more fruitful than Estrgon’s sensuality .

Lucky and Pozzo Symbols in Waiting for Godot:-

When we turn to Lucky we find out a difference responses, Lucky is one of the symbols in’Waiting for Godot’ who is symbolized as a slave or we can say that today laborer in some factory who knows only his duty , on the other hand Pozzo is one of the symbols in ‘Waiting for Godot’ who represents to industrialist , who wants to be more profit by his worker .And the workers have been grown old , they hardhearted business men get out of them by their duties. This can be seen in the case ,when Lucky’s owner is going to sale him because he narrates that to Estragon he is not profitable now. Pozzo is a symbol of materialist now a day and Lucky is symbol of poor work in this play “Waiting for Godot’ , it is very clear cut when we find out Pozzo drives out a piece of chicken by his bag and starts to eat it .He does not give any bite to his servant Lucky. When he finishes his  a piece of  chicken ,he throws towards Lucky ,then Lucky starts to eat this bone , this clears the concept of hardhearted business man approach. This scene reveals the industrialists get a big lion share of wealth while the poor servants gain only little bit coin. These coin never fills full their desires .

As far as far symbols of Waiting for Godot are concerned,it is rope which is symbol of authority , we see when this rope keeps in hand of Pozzo , he considers to be the owner while this rope comes in to hand of Lucky in 2 act he is known to be the owner of Pozzo. Lucky  shows no desire to enquire and to questions. He has found his meaning in the negation of his own personality He is the Sheep who is found his Shepherd through Pozzo is the violent Shepherd Lucky wants to be led, nor to lead .He is shown in total  submission to  Pozzo.  Pozzo’s response is of course the exact reverse of Lucky. He finds his meaning in the exercise of personal power. There is no rational  behind the exercise of that power .

He has simply accepted the submission of Lucky as his rule. The in inadequacy of the responses of both Pozzo and lucky is seen in the fait which overcome them. Blind and dumb respectively, they stumble of stage ,broken shells of the figures we had been before .so characters represent mankind in general and mankind responses to things an occurrence around .There remains one more respect in which the characters might be set to bear symbolic  value. No female figure appears in the play. If there is sexuality ,it might be said to appear in the homosexual  overtones of the relationship between Estragon  and Vladimir .It is scarcely a starling feature of the play for, as we have seen previously , the relationship we witness among the characters are essentially  sterile .The sterility , the absence of the promise of regeneration ,is only confirmed by the absence of any  female figure.

Some mention of the motive of nakedness in Beckett’s world is worthy of elaboration the most important  reference here is to the incident near the end of the play. And of the play, where is a Estragon having used the string form his trousers  in the vain attempt at hanging, suffer the integrity of having his trousers  fall down .There is more to his in incident then the obviously  gross humor involved. It is profitable to call to mind the motif of the nakedness in Shakespeare King Lear. Lear at first suffers from a kind of spiritual  blindness in his ignorance .He banish his daughter his daughter Cordillia because she will not make in public of formal declaration of her love for him. He turns instead to his to elder daughter goneril and Regan,  whose full some protestant of love are patently hypocritical but Lear does not see the hypocrisy. He is blind to the dark depth of human nature. His understanding of the divine forces of the universe is similarity naive. Proud of his royalty, he assumes that those forces will act constantly on his behalf .His life form that moment becomes a growth in awareness, Awareness of the darkness of the human soul and of the appearance Indifference of the universe to human race. The crisis in that for process is his encounter with the mad beggar, Tom. When he sees this for forlorn  creature, bubbling incoherently, naked in the middle of the storm Lear cries out  is man no more than this ?and he goes on to declare that indeed man is such a poor bear forked surely  it is poor bare forked animal which Beckett portrays in the person of Estragon. This is main the dramatist seems to be telling us strip away from the pretensions ,divorce him from the sophisticated  of his rational schemes and theories expose the Puny grandeur  of his aspiration and we see the creature for what he is by this method than we have reinforce the idea which is central in the theater of absurd the absurdity of the incongruity  between what man is and what he longs to be.

As we know that Waiting for Godot has various symbols in itself so , the road is also a symbol in this play, it has symbolic significance, it is symbolized to road of life .Just like human’s life has no clear vision about life, same is the case is here the road also has no complete ending. It is linked with human’s life because human’s life has no clear purpose of life .A man tries to find his existence in this world.

The tree, it has been suggested represent the cross on which Jesus of Nazareth was crucified. As such the argument runs ,it stands as a symbol of hope in the play’Waiting for Godot’ for it means that the religions dimension is not altogether absent .Indeed  the cross which is often referred to as tree in Christian literature is not a symbol of despair to the Christian .In the light of the resurrection , it is in fact, the very opposite ,it is a sign of victory over the forces of the world. Moreover it is dammed, interpretation of the tree in waiting for Godot is confirmed by the fact that the tree is seen to have grown leaves in the second act .However such a theory of helpfulness needs to be examined critically, taking into account the reaction of Estragon and Vladimir. When the tree first is mention again in act 2, the growth of leaves does not attract attention. It is simply a landmark by which Vladimir tries to convince his friend that they were in the same place the day before. However , again this is the topic of conversation by describing the entire landscape as muck heap. later Vladimir does point out specially  that wears  as the tree was black and bare yesterday , it  now  has leave this fact astonishes him. That such an event could  take place in a single night is a source of  wonderment .But the topic of conversation is carried no further . Vladimir flash of awareness .of the possibility of a new dimension and as usual with rejection by Estragon. To him the appearance of the leaves has no mystical significant .It is simply a manifestation of  surprising or else it is not the same Tree at all.The result is that the  the conversation drifts once  More into an in conclusion discussion of whether they were inconclusive discussion of weather they were in fact in the same place yesterday. In view of this lake of response it is difficult to interpret the tree as a symbol of hope. Surely what matters above all is the response of the tramps to the tree and the difference it might seem to make to them. The response is hardly more than diffident .If there is hope they certainly do not recognize it. The tree would rather seem to be symbol of the irrelevance of the Christian response to their predicament.
